Summer Vibes, Not Highs: How to Have Fun Without Substances

After a long school year, we are finally here: summer break! Summer is the perfect time to let loose: whether that’s movie nights under the stars, pool parties with your crew, or catching live music at festivals. Maybe your phone is already buzzing nonstop with invites and plans. But alongside all the good times, you might also find yourself facing something unexpected: pressure to drink, smoke, or try other things that mess with your head “just for fun.”

Why Summer Can Be Risky for Teens

Summer might feel like a carefree time, but it’s actually one of the riskiest periods of the year when it comes to first-time substance use. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, June and July are the months when most teens first try alcohol, marijuana, or cigarettes. In fact, nearly one in three new teen marijuana users starts during summer. And every single day, over 11,000 teens try alcohol for the first time.

Why does this happen? The answer is pretty simple: summer means more free time, fewer structured activities, and less adult supervision. School isn’t in session, and that can lead to boredom or wanting to fit in with friends who are experimenting. Unfortunately, this also means emergency room visits related to underage drinking and drug use spike during the summer months, especially around big holidays like the Fourth of July.

What to Say When You’re Pressured

It’s totally normal to feel awkward when someone pressures you to try something you’re not comfortable with. Saying no can be tough, especially when you want to fit in or avoid making things weird. But having a few simple, go-to responses can make it easier. Try something like:

  • “I’m good, I just don’t mess with that stuff.”

  • “I’ve got stuff going on tomorrow, so I’m passing.”

  • “I’m the designated driver tonight, so I’m sticking to water.”

  • “I’m trying to keep it chill this summer.  I don’t need that drama.”

The most important thing to remember is this: if someone gives you a hard time for making a smart choice, the awkwardness is on them,  not you. Real friends will respect your decisions and support you.

Fun Doesn’t Require Substances

Here’s the good news: summer fun doesn’t have to involve drinking, smoking, or anything that could harm you. There are tons of ways to have a blast without risking your health or safety.

If you love water, grab a couple of friends and plan a day at the beach, lake, or pool. Try water sports, like paddleboarding, beach ball, or just float around with your favorite music playing. If you’re more into the outdoors, summer is the perfect time for hikes or bike rides to explore new trails, discover hidden spots, and breathe in that fresh air. You can also keep things simple and relaxing with a picnic or BBQ in the park.

For chill nights, movie marathons or game nights with friends never go out of style. Or, switch things up by trying out new coffee shops or ice cream spots in your town: perfect for discovering your new favorite hangout.

If you want a bit more action, check out local fairs, carnivals, and community events. The Marin County Fair, coming up soon, has a fun “Bug-Tastic!” theme this year. They’re bringing a stellar lineup of performers, fun rides, tasty food, and activities for everyone to enjoy with friends and family.

Looking to give back while having fun? Volunteering for local causes is a rewarding way to spend time, meet new people, and make a difference. I’m continuing a few community initiatives that I started during the school year, and it feels great to have more spare time to work on them and stay connected with people over summer break. And if thrills are your thing, amusement parks and arcades offer endless excitement and unforgettable memories.

Final Thought: Make Memories, Not Mistakes

Summer is all about making memories that last a lifetime, not regrets. The best nights usually happen when you’re fully yourself, laughing with friends, and enjoying the moment without risking your health or future. You don’t need a drink, a hit, or a pill to have an unforgettable summer. What you really need is good people, good energy, and a good plan.

So this summer, choose the kind of fun that lifts you up and keeps you safe. Make this one your best summer yet, full of memories, laughter, and real moments you’ll never forget.
